Azulejo Research for the candidacy to UNESCO World Heritage status

Portuguese glazed ceramic tiles (azulejos) are arguably the most original contribution of Portugal to the tangible cultural heritage of Europe. FCT-AzuRe is a research project started on June 01, 2016 and funded by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT- Foundation for Science and Technology) aimed to support a candidacy to World Heritage status of a set of monuments with integrated azulejo panels or tiled façades.
FCT-AzuRe takes up the challenge of elucidating two obscure moments in the development of the Portuguese taste for azulejos: the inception of the production of faience tiles in Portugal during the second half of the 16th century; and the onset of their use as façade finishes during the first half of the 19th century. Additionally, the rekindling of the taste for integrated azulejos in the exterior during the modernist period will also be studied.
This site includes data on the project itself, its results, related bibliography, a database of instrumental results on the micro-morphology and compositions of azulejos, and sets of images aimed at helping each reader build up his imaginary museum of azulejos on periods that determined their history.

Os azulejos constituem provavelmente a contribuição mais original de Portugal para o património tangível europeu. FCT-AzuRe é um projeto de investigação financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) que visa apoiar a candidatura a Patrimônio Mundial de um conjunto de edificações com azulejos integrados. Iniciou-se em 2016-06-01 e terá a duração de 36 meses.
O FCT-AzuRe aceita o desafio de elucidar dois momentos obscuros no desenvolvimento do gosto português pelo azulejo: o início da produção de azulejos de faiança em Portugal, durante a segunda metade do século XVI; e o início de seu uso como revestimentos de fachada durante a primeira metade do século XIX. Além disso, também será estudado o reavivamento do gosto pelos azulejos integrados no exterior, durante o período modernista.
Este site inclui dados sobre o próprio projecto, seus resultados, bibliografia relacionada, uma base de dados de resultados instrumentais sobre a micro-morfologia e a composição química de azulejos e ainda conjuntos de imagens destinadas a ajudar cada leitor a construir o seu próprio museu imaginário da azulejaria portuguesa em períodos que determinaram a sua história.
